The Australian Curriculum Languages provided by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) are:

• practical approaches for implementing the Australian Curriculum while meeting Western Australian curriculum and reporting requirements.

Pre-primary to Year 10: Languages curriculum – Familiarisation seminars

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) is offering online learning seminars during Term 4 to support schools with familiarisation with the Western Australian curriculum for Pre‑primary to Year 10 Languages.

These seminars will be an opportunity for teachers and curriculum leaders to gain a deeper understanding of specific aspects of the revised curriculum.

The focus areas for each session have been chosen from teacher feedback in the curriculum familiarisation workshops earlier in the year.

Year 9 Humanities and Social Sciences: ‘The Pinjarra Massacre: Truth-telling’ teacher support resources – In-person and online workshops

In Term 4, the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) will deliver professional learning workshops to support teachers to use the Year 9 teaching and learning exemplar, ‘The Pinjarra Massacre: Truth-telling’.

These workshops provide a valuable opportunity for teachers to engage with ‘The Pinjarra Massacre: Truth-telling. An apology on October 28, 2025 to the Bindjareb Noongar people by His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson AC APM Governor of Western Australia’.

Workshops will be available in metropolitan and regional locations, with both in-person and online options.

There is no cost to attend; however, places are limited and registration is essential.

The list includes examples of texts that teachers may use as a starting point when selecting texts that align to the content of the Western Australian curriculum: English.

The list is not mandated, and schools should review texts before using them in their classroom to make choices regarding their appropriateness and to ensure they cater to the needs of their students.

The Structured improvisation information document supports teachers and students to explore, create and practise structured improvisation tasks in preparation for the Year 12 Dance ATAR course practical examination.

Drama General Year 11 and Year 12 – New syllabuses

The Drama General course syllabuses for teaching in Year 11 from 2027 and Year 12 from 2028 are available on the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) website.

The development of the new syllabus documents was informed by a consultation process initiated in 2023. This process culminated in the completion of the syllabus acceptance and implementation timeline survey, which was undertaken by schools currently delivering the Drama General course in Years 11 and 12.

Music ATAR course – Designated works list 2027–2030

Design ATAR Year 12 – Minor syllabus changes and assessment briefings and workshops

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority will communicate in the October Circular confirmation that minor syllabus changes for the Year 12 Design ATAR course for teaching in 2027 have been published.

These changes pertain to the Design ATAR course Practical (Portfolio) examination design brief which aim to reduce the maximum length of portfolio submissions from 30 pages to 20 pages.

The October Circular will also include details of assessment workshops and course briefing sessions scheduled for Term 4, 2026 and Term 1, 2027 to support teachers with the minor syllabus changes.

Absence from ATAR course written examinations

Candidates who experience illness or a misadventure on the day of the ATAR course written examination must submit a Sickness/Misadventure application form to the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority).The form is available under the Examinations accordion on the Authority website at https://scsa.wa.edu.au/forms/forms.

A candidate who experiences illness on the day of the ATAR course written examination should not attend the examination venue. Should a candidate be absent from an ATAR course written examination due to illness, a Sickness/Misadventure application form must be submitted to the Authority with Section D of the application completed by a medical practitioner. Additional information may be attached to the application.

Should a candidate experience a misadventure on the day of the ATAR course written examination, a Sickness/Misadventure application form must be submitted to the Authority with Section C (non-medical) of the application completed by someone who is not related to the candidate and who was a witness to the misadventure. Additional information may be attached to the application.

For ATAR course written examination sickness/misadventure applications, the completed form and any supporting documentation must be received by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority, PO Box 816 CANNINGTON, WA, 6987 by 4.00 pm on Tuesday, 24 November 2026.

All applications for ATAR course written examinations must be submitted immediately following the last examination affected by the illness or misadventure. Late applications will not be accepted.

Envelopes must be marked, Confidential – Attention Special Provisions. Electronic applications are not accepted.

2026 ATAR course examinations general information – Equipment and materials, identification and timetables, late arrivals

It is important for schools to inform students of the rules on authorised examination materials.

This is the fourth Circular item in the series of general examination information provided by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) to support schools in building students’ understanding of processes and key dates for the 2026 ATAR course examinations.

The Authority has established rules for authorised equipment and materials in written and practical examinations.

Authorised items and materials

Detailed information on authorised equipment and materials for practical and written examinations is available on the examination front cover document for each ATAR course examination available under the ‘Examination materials’ accordion on the relevant ATAR course page at https://senior-secondary.scsa.wa.edu.au/syllabus-and-support-materials.

Information on equipment and materials for both practical and written examinations is available in Appendix C: Materials required/recommended for written examinations 2026 of the Year 12 Information Handbook Part II: Examinations at https://www.scsa.wa.edu.au/publications/year-12-information.

Unauthorised items and materials

Items other than those listed on the front cover of each examination paper are classified as unauthorised and should not be brought into the examination room. It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that they do not bring any unauthorised material into the examination room.

If unauthorised items or materials are brought into the examination room, it is the candidate’s responsibility to declare these item/s or materials to the Examination supervisor prior to the commencement of examination. Failure to do so may result in the matter being referred to the Breach of Examination Rules Committee.

For practical examinations, the supervisor will instruct candidates on where to place unauthorised items. For written examinations, the supervisor will provide a bag for the unauthorised item/s which must be placed under the candidate’s chair and remain there until the candidate leaves the room on completion of the examination.

Note: the supervisor cannot accept responsibility for any items, authorised or unauthorised, left behind in the examination room.

Identification and personalised examination timetable

It is important that examination candidates download their Personalised practical examination timetable, if applicable, and their Personalised written examination timetable from the student portal at https://studentportal.scsa.wa.edu.au. These personalised timetables contain the date, venue, time and location of each examination in which the candidate is enrolled.

Candidates must take their signed Personalised examination timetable, as proof of enrolment, and photographic identification (such as a driver’s licence or school library card) into each examination. An image of a Personalised examination timetable on a phone will not be accepted as proof of enrolment.

If a candidate does not provide their timetable or photo identification a Candidate identification check form will be used to make random checks of candidate identification throughout the examination period.

Late arrivals

The expectations and rules for arrival times for both practical and written examinations were outlined in Edition 5 of this Circular available at https://www.scsa.wa.edu.au/7to12-circulars/edition-5-may-2026.

The practical examinations requirements documents are available under the ‘Examination support materials’ on the relevant course page of the Authority website.

For written examinations, it is mandatory for candidates to arrive at the examination centre at least 30 minutes before the prescribed start time for an examination.

ATAR course written examinations – school copy of Question and answer booklet

Schools are permitted one copy of an ATAR course written examination Question/Answer booklet that has been sat by their students. To avoid disruption to candidates, the Question/Answer booklet/s will be delivered to the school reception or administration area of the examination centre approximately one hour after the examination working time begins or after the examination is completed, depending on Supervisor availability.

School staff must not enter or approach the examination room to request a copy of the Question/Answer booklet.

Each school must collect the copy from the reception or administration area of the examination centre at which their students are sitting the examination.

Note:

• For examinations with large candidatures, such as English, several teachers may deliver the course at the same school; however, only one copy of the Question/Answer booklet is provided to each school.
• For Language courses, candidates are often grouped at major examination centres. Each school is entitled to one copy of the Question/Answer booklet, which will be left at the school reception or administration area of the examination centre.

If a school has students sitting an examination at a centre other than their own school, and a school representative is unable to collect the examination paper from that centre, the school may request a copy by emailing exams@scsa.wa.edu.au by Friday, 27 November 2026. Phone requests cannot be accepted.

Due to copyright provisions, spare copies of the Question/Answer booklet and inserts are not able to be provided to schools. For examinations with an aural component, no copies of the recording are provided to schools. Schools with no students sitting an ATAR course examination in 2026 will be able to download a copy of Question/Answer booklet from the School Curriculum and Standards Authority website early in 2027.

2027 COAT contexts for Year 12 EAL/D ATAR

The syllabus contexts related to the 2027 common oral assessment task (COAT) will be available from Friday, 25 September 2026 on the School Curriculum and Standards Authority website.

All students enrolled in the Year 12 English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) ATAR course are required to complete the COAT.

The COAT is based on Unit 3 syllabus contexts. The syllabus contexts, highlighted within the document, will be available on the EAL/D ATAR course page at https://senior-secondary.scsa.wa.edu.au/syllabus-and-support-materials/english/english-as-an-additional-language-or-dialect.

The COAT will be administered in schools during Weeks 3, 4, 5 and 6 of Term 2, 2027.

2027 EST content for all Year 12 General and Foundation courses

The syllabus content related to the 2027 externally set tasks (ESTs) will be available from Friday, 25 September 2026.

The syllabus content information will be available on relevant course pages on the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) website at https://senior-secondary.scsa.wa.edu.au.

The EST is based on Unit 3 syllabus content. The syllabus content to be assessed in the EST is highlighted within the Selected Unit 3 syllabus content for the Externally set task 2027 document for every Foundation and General course.

The EST will be administered in schools during Weeks 3, 4 and 5 of Term 2, 2027.

All Foundation course ESTs will include the skills of literacy and numeracy in association with the identified 2027 EST Unit 3 content.

All students enrolled in a Year 12 Foundation or Year 12 General course are required to complete the EST for that course.

The Authority will publish the Externally Set Tasks Handbook 2027 in early 2027.

Applications for the development of the 2027 ATAR course examinations

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) is seeking applications from current and retired teachers, Technical and Further Education (TAFE) and university lecturers for various positions on the 2027 ATAR course Examination panels.

Examination panels are responsible for setting the ATAR course examinations in accordance with course examination design briefs and for the development of all necessary examination materials.

All applicants should have at least three years’ experience in teaching and assessment, an excellent understanding of examination-setting techniques and familiarity with the syllabus to be examined in 2027 in the relevant course.

Positions that may be available for all examination panels are:

• Chief examiner
• Examiner
• Independent reviewer
• Paper checker.

Information regarding these roles, including the terms of reference, the duties of examination panels members, the Code of Conduct, an indicative timeline for members, and the application process is available on the Authority’s Employment page at https://www.scsa.wa.edu.au/about-us/employment.

All Examination panel members must have a current Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) and a Screening Clearance Number (SCN), which is issued by the Department of Education. You will be informed if your NCCHC is current if you are appointed to the 2027 ATAR examination panel. If it is not current, you will have to obtain an NCCHC before commencing.

Completed applications must be received no later than 5.00 pm on Friday, 23 October 2026.

Successful applicants will be contacted and appointments to positions finalised by Friday, 13 November 2026.

Note: the Authority may offer successful applicants a panel position different from those selected on the original application form.

2027 Year 12 ATAR Dance course practical (performance) examination set solo material

The set solo for the 2027 Year 12 ATAR Dance course practical (performance) examination will be Set Solo 4 – Experiences of Love.

All schools were sent a copy of the USB containing the set solo materials in 2024. Schools that do not have a copy of the USB should contact the School Curriculum and Standards Authority.

The USB contains the set solo video footage (full performance, breakdown of phrases with music and breakdown of phrases with notes), music track for the set solo, detailed breakdown notes of each phrase and technical notes, which include the choreographer’s intent.

Candidates enrolled in Dance ATAR Year 12 in 2027 will be required to learn Set Solo 4 – Experiences of Love for Performance two of the Dance ATAR course practical (performance) examination.

2026 Year 12 student achievement data

Schools must upload all Year 12 student achievement data to the Student Information Records System (SIRS).

Information about collecting achievement data will be received by schools by Monday, 12 October 2026.

Schools will need to provide the achievement data for:

• Year 12 students for courses (ATAR, General, Foundation, Preliminary and vocational education and training (VET) industry specific), VET qualifications, VET units of competency, Department of Training and Workforce Development (DTWD) funded VET skill sets and endorsed programs
• non-Year 12 students sitting one or more ATAR course examinations.

This achievement data must by uploaded to SIRS by Thursday, 29 October 2026.

Western Australian student number requests for 2027

All current students in Western Australia should be registered with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) and should have an allocated Western Australian student number (WASN).

This number remains with the student throughout their life. Schools need to recognise the importance of the WASN to avoid duplicate records and maintain continuity of student data.

Kindergarten students

From Monday 19 October 2026, schools will only be able to request WASNs through the Student Information Record System (SIRS) for Kindergarten students commencing in 2027.

Note: the Authority does not issue numbers for pre-Kindergarten students.

Pre‑primary onwards

For students other than Kindergarten who transfer from another WA school, check whether they already have a WASN before requesting a new number.

Instructions on how to search for a WASN are available in Section 4.3 of the Data Procedures Manual 2026 available at https://www.scsa.wa.edu.au/publications/data-procedures-manual.

For new students commencing in 2027 who do not have a WASN, schools should request a new number beginning in January 2027.

Troubleshooting

If the search details do not match the information in SIRS, such as a different date of birth or spelling variation, no record will be found.

If a number cannot be located, email numbers@scsa.wa.edu.au with the student’s legal family name, legal given name, date of birth and academic year, and your school code.

If a school requests a WASN for a student who already has one, the correct WASN will be provided.

Outstanding applications for permission to enrol in a WACE Language course in Years 11 or 12 in 2027 must be received by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority by Friday, 16 October 2026.

Applications for permission to enrol in a WACE Language course in Years 11 or 12 in 2027 closed on Friday, 28 August 2026.

Students who have started and who intend to continue with their application must complete and submit it through the student portal at https://identity.scsa.wa.edu.au by Friday, 16 October 2026.

Students who have started an application but have not submitted it and have decided not to continue their study of a language in Years 11 or 12 in 2027 should cancel their application in the student portal at https://identity.scsa.wa.edu.au.

Note: any application that has been started but not submitted by Friday, 16 October 2026 will be deleted from the system.

2026 Folio of achievement

Students who completed Year 12 in 2026 will be able to download digital copies of their folio of achievement from mid-January 2027.

To download digital copies of the documents and certificates, students need to log in to the student portal at https://studentportal.scsa.wa.edu.au with their eight-digit Western Australian student number (WASN) and password.

Year 12 students who have satisfactorily completed any Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) course unit, Preliminary unit, vocational education and training (VET) unit of competency (including Department of Training and Workforce Development funded VET skill sets) or endorsed program will have a folio of achievement.

The folio of achievement will include one or more of the following:

• Western Australian Statement of Student Achievement (WASSA)
• Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE)
• ATAR course report
• award certificates, if attained.

Year 12 ATAR course examination results

Students who sit the 2026 ATAR course examinations will be able to access their results mid-December 2026 via the student portal.

Education institutions can verify if a student has achieved the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) through the WACE Authentication tool. Schools should inform Year 12 students about the availability of this tool.

Students who are seeking admission to overseas or interstate educational institutions can inform those institutions about this tool. This is particularly useful for universities and colleges not familiar with the WACE. Potential employers can also verify a student’s achievement by using the tool.
