2025 ATAR Chief Supervisor - Practical and Written Examinations (Casual pool)

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) sets, administers and marks external examinations for Year 12 ATAR courses. The Authority also conducts nominated Interstate Language examinations. The Examinations, Certification and Testing (ECT) Directorate is responsible for managing the logistics for the delivery of Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) course examinations.

The Authority establishes over 200 assessment centres/venues to conduct the practical and written examinations to over 10,000 students throughout Western Australia and overseas. Each assessment centre has an appointed Chief Supervisor and Supervisors to assist with the conduct of the ATAR course practical and written examinations.

About the role
The Authority are currently looking for suitable and reliable people to fulfil the position of Chief Supervisor for ATAR courses both in practical and written examinations

A Chief Supervisor needs to demonstrate accuracy and attention to detail, ensuring examinations are conducted fairly and in accordance with the Authority policies and procedures. This role requires the demonstration of appropriate and professional workplace behaviours, high-level communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to confidently and respectfully handle various situations that may arise. The ability to work effectively in a high-pressure work environment is crucial. Strong leadership and organisation skills are essential to direct, support and maintain the integrity and security of the examination process.

Availability and Work hours
A Chief Supervisor must be available to work throughout the entire examination period at their designated assessment centre.
Practical examinations will be conducted from Saturday, 27 September to Sunday, 26 October 2025. The examinations are scheduled between approximately 8:30 am and 5:30 pm, including weekends and public holidays. Each course will have different requirements on time and duration of the examination.
Written examinations will be conducted on weekdays from Wednesday, 29 October to Thursday, 20 November 2025, with up to two examination sessions per day.

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees must:

  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or have a valid visa with relevant work rights for the term of the appointment*
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment *
  • Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check (WWC)*
  • read the Handbook for supervising ATAR Course examinations
  • attend an Information session held at the Authority (online or in person)
  • complete the Authority Chief Supervisor online training
  • have computer literacy skills including basic understanding of Microsoft applications, ability to send/receive emails, and complete online forms
  • have a mobile phone, access to a computer and the internet
  • have the physical fitness - ability to stand for lengthy periods of time, lifting of examination materials, resources and equipment weighing up to 20 kg, walking large distances including walking up stairs.

*not applicable for Chief Supervisor appointments for locations outside of Australia

Chief Supervisor Second in Charge (2IC)
Some of the larger assessment centres may require a 2IC Chief Supervisor. If you are not successful in being appointed as a Chief Supervisor at an assessment centre, you may be appointed as a 2IC Chief Supervisor. The role of the 2IC Chief Supervisor is to support the Chief Supervisor and ensure that large and complex assessment centres maintain business continuity in case of illness or unforeseen circumstances.

Payment

Practical examinations
Chief Supervisors are paid an hourly rate of $46.50, excluding a standard 30-minute-break.

Written examinations
Chief Supervisors are paid an examination session payment that is based upon the number of candidates enrolled for a session. Payment includes the time required to set up the alternative rooms for candidates approved for equitable adjustments. The base rate begins at $209.25 for between 1 and 20 candidates and increases as number of candidates increases.

Superannuation contribution
The Department of Education, in accordance with the Superannuation Guarantee Percentage, will pay on a Chief Supervisor’s behalf 12% to the Government Employees Superannuation Board (GESB) or a superannuation fund elected by the Chief Supervisor.
