Primary school leaders are advised that registration for the Brightpath project in Semester 1 2018 will be accepted by email to Maureen Lorimer at maureen.lorimer@scsa.wa.edu.au by Friday 13 October 2017.  This is for schools who are currently not registered in 2017. You will be contacted shortly after with an information package regarding the WA Student Number (WASN) plus the due date for registration and demographic information to be supplied to the Authority.  

Participation in the Brightpath project requires the following commitments:

• application for WA Student Numbers
• registration of all students and teachers in the project by uploading data to the Authority
• provision by the school of appropriate support and training for all the school's teachers using the workshop materials
• assess all students at least twice during the year.

The Authority will meet the cost of access to the Brightpath Basic Package for schools wishing to participate in the project. This includes unlimited access to the assessment process for all scales, and access to the following central reports:

• Results
• Performance profile
• Teaching points.

Workshop materials are provided to support school leaders in up-skilling their staff.

The Brightpath assessment and reporting software allows teachers to make reliable assessments of student achievements in a range of areas, based on student performances of classroom assessment tasks.  These include:

• Early childhood oral narrative
• Early childhood recount
• Information report writing
• Narrative writing
• Persuasive writing
• Science investigation.

The software records the results of assessments and reports a range of formative and summative information to teachers and principals. This provides an informed basis for developing teaching programs that target the needs of individual students. It facilitates efficient and systematic collection of school-wide data to support rigorous evaluation of both teaching and learning.

With a large number of students now registered with a Western Australian Student Number (WASN), it is imperative that this number remains with the student throughout their school life. Schools need to recognise the importance of the WASN to avoid duplication of records and maintain continuity of student data.

From Term 4 2017, batches of WA Student Numbers can only be requested through SIRS for students entering Kindergarten in 2018.

Schools where most students already have a WASN and new students have enrolled who require a number, please check first using the ‘Search for WASN’ process – explained in ‘How to Search for WA Student Numbers in SIRS’ in the Circular July 2017. If you cannot locate a number, please contact numbers@scsa.wa.edu.au and give details of the student’s legal surname, legal first name, date of birth and academic year.  It is also useful to include your school code in any correspondence.

All secondary schools will be required to send a complete list of Year 7 students entering their school, including the student’s legal surname, legal first name and date of birth. Numbers will be sent back where allocated to students and new numbers requested for those without.

If your school is registering all of your students for the first time, please send a spreadsheet of the student information to numbers@scsa.wa.edu.au, and include legal surname, legal first name and date of birth.  We will then check to see if any of the students have a WASN already and advise you of this number, and if not, we will issue batches of numbers which you can import into your database/system prior to uploading the SRGDG to SIRS.

In July 2017, the Languages Achievement Standards were placed in the year level syllabuses, accessible within the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline, for each of the six languages subjects: Chinese: Second Language, French: Second Language, German: Second Language, Indonesian: Second Language, Italian: Second Language and Japanese: Second Language from Pre-primary to Year 6.

To support schools with the first year of implementation of the Year 3 syllabuses for Languages in 2018, teachers are advised that for all six languages subjects:

• the Assessment Pointers for Pre-primary to Year 6 are available on the Authority’s extranet
• Assessment Activities for Pre-primary to Year 6 are available on the Authority’s extranet
• Annotated Work Samples for Pre-primary to Year 4 are being progressively uploaded during Term 3, 2017
• Annotated student work samples for Year 5 and Year 6 are being progressively uploaded during Term 3 and will continue to be uploaded during Term 4, 2017.

The Authority will continue to work with teachers to finalise the Year 7 to Year 10 Achievement Standards and Judging Standards materials during 2017.

The Health Education syllabuses teach students how to be part of a healthy, active population and experience the personal and social benefits of living a healthy, active and fulfilling life.

As outlined in the Pre-primary to Year 10: Teaching, Assessing and Reporting Policy and Standards, Health Education is mandated across all schools. The Pre-primary to Year 10 curriculum provides a coherent and comprehensive set of prescribed content and achievement standards which schools will use to plan student learning programs, assess student progress and report to parents.

The Ways of Teaching video supports teachers in their understanding of the organisation and approach to the implementation and teaching of Health and Physical Education. Through a strengths-based approach, the Health Education syllabuses aim to develop students’ skills to enable them to make informed decisions and ultimately enhance the health and wellbeing of themselves and others. The focus on developing health literacy assists students with interpreting and assessing health messages and making decisions on the relevance of the vast amount of information available from a range of sources.

The nature of the syllabus provides schools with an opportunity to develop appropriate teaching and learning programs that address the needs of their students through the selection of relevant contexts.

Teaching and assessment support material is available to assist teachers with the implementation of the Health Education curriculum. Sample materials include Teaching and Learning Outlines, Assessment Activities and Judging Standards materials (assessment pointers and annotated work samples). The sample resources are supported with online materials, developed by stakeholders who endeavour to provide support for teachers in the delivery of health education year level syllabuses.
