SIRS reporting of VET integrated into WACE 2015-16 course units 2015 and beyond

From 2015 the Authority does not require schools to notify the agency on whether VET units of competency have been integrated into WACE 2015-16 course units. Under the WACE 2015-16 arrangements, all VET achievement, regardless of how a school chooses to deliver a qualification, will attract unit equivalence towards the WACE (except VET industry specific courses which attract course unit credit towards the WACE).
Schools may still decide to undertake their own processes to continue integrating a VET qualification into a WACE course, however no student work relating to VET is to be used as evidence to meet the Authority’s moderation processes of WACE courses and the Authority does not need to be notified of the delivery arrangement.
In terms of the Authority’s reporting requirements, VET units of competency are only required to be reported as VET integrated if the student is enrolled in a VET industry specific course. This process ensures course completion will be correctly recognised in SIRS and that WACE course unit credit is allocated upon completion of the course requirements. The course type identifier for a VET industry specific course is VETCOS. Using the course type identifier COS to distinguish a VET integrated enrolment will be disallowed when reporting enrolments to the Authority’s SIRS database.
There will be no changes to the process for integrating VET into existing WACE courses in 2015.

Please ensure students sitting the Stage 2 WACE examination Music are enrolled in the correct context. As there are no enrolments this year for Stage 2 WACE examination Music – Jazz and Western Art, these contexts will not be examined. Only the Contemporary context will be available for Stage 2 WACE examination Music candidates.

Candidates who do not have the required equipment and/or clothing will not be permitted to participate in a practical examination.
The following list includes personal items, safety equipment and/or clothing required by candidates participating in the 2014 WACE practical (performance) examinations.
Any candidate who arrives at an examination without the items listed below will not be permitted to participate in the practical examination. Please note that students who do not complete the examination will be deemed as having not completed the course. This may affect WACE achievement.

The 2015 WACE written examinations will run from Monday, 2 November to
Friday, 27 November.
The 2015 WACE practical examinations will be scheduled as follows:
- Saturday, 26 September to Sunday, 4 October (Saturday, Sunday and the public holiday included)
Aviation, Dance, Drama, Music and Physical Education Studies
- Saturday, 26 September to Sunday, 11 October (Saturday, Sunday and the public holiday included)
English as an Additional Language/Dialect (overseas schools)
- Saturday, 17 October
Chinese: Second Language
- Saturday, 17 October and Sunday, 18 October
Japanese: Second Language and Indonesian: Second Language
- Saturday, 17 October to Sunday, 25 October (Saturday and Sunday included)
English as an Additional Language/Dialect (Western Australian schools), French, German and Italian
A school will notbe able to specify particular day/s for the practical examinations to be held for all of its students. Students from a school must be randomly allocated to examination times throughout all of the days allotted for a course. This process ensures anonymity for all candidates.
Schools are advised to plan activities such as school examinations, final-day assembly, graduation, valedictory dinners and leavers’ breakfast on dates other than those listed above. These activities should be scheduled when there are no examinations for local students, such as between Monday, 5 October and Friday, 16 October or between Monday, 26 October and Friday, 30 October.
Schools are requested to communicate the written and practical examination dates to students, teachers and parents. No allowance in the timetable can be made for holidays, work or personal arrangements.
French WACE practical (oral) examination

Candidates who do not bring a stimulus item into the French practical (oral) examination will not be assessed in Part B of that examination.
The French practical (oral) examination design brief requires Stage 2 and Stage 3 candidates to bring one stimulus item of their choice for Part B of the examination.
If a candidate does not bring a stimulus item into the examination then Part B: Discussion prompted by stimulus item will not be assessed. For this part of the examination, the candidate will receive a zero (0). Part B of the examination is worth 10% of the total examination.
If the candidate (except private candidates) does not bring a stimulus item to the examination due to an unforseen event beyond their control at the time of the examination, then they could submit a sickness/misadventure application. Forgetting to bring the stimulus item or leaving it at home does not constitute an unforseen event beyond the control of the candidate at the time of the examination. Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) Handbook

In response to feedback from schools, the Authority has published an OLNA Handbook, which provides information on:
- demonstrating the minimum standard through OLNA
- administering the assessments
- using feedback to assist students.
The OLNA Handbook also provides information on policies, procedures and guidelines relevant for schools, teachers and other members of the education community.
The Authority has also published, to support teachers, the OLNA Writing guide. The guide exemplifies writing where the OLNA standard has been demonstrated and also where it has not.
